Summer status report – vacation, work and Rust

I finally managed to carve out some time for the blog, so here’s my post, in case anyone’s interested 🙂
So, how has my summer been so far? Well, in July I went kayaking on the Danube, starting from DonauEschingen down to Regensburg, on one of the most beautiful stretches of the river. I’ll write more about this in a later post, since it was a fantastic experience and I can only recommend it to everyone. As soon as I got back from vacation, I gave myself a week off, then got to work. I’ve been busy with that ever since, and when I’m not working or having fun, I’m on the computer — specifically my newly discovered favorite, Rust.
I won’t introduce Rust in detail — those who know it, good for them, and those who don’t should know it’s a survival game (I know, there are many of those nowadays, but this one is pretty good) where the main difficulty for survival is other players. It can be hard to play alone, so it’s worth teaming up with others, building a nice base, and then getting to work on upgrading items, raiding other players, or building an economic empire. The other day my buddy and I ran to an airdrop, but by the time we got there, someone had already picked up the items. We headed back to base disappointed, when I noticed a guy lying dead on a wooden trap, with the door to his base wide open. As it turned out, this was the guy who picked up the items. I didn’t hesitate — I nicely relieved his corpse of its valuable cargo, which made me richer by 2 Thompsons and a bolt-action rifle. Then we sprinted back to base like two full kindergarteners. The poor kid who (as it turned out later, died in his own traps) asked us to at least return the bolt-action rifle. Since I’m not a jerk, I fulfilled his request, plus I threw in some food and first aid kits. After that he became a pretty good neighbor, sometimes dropping by to check on the place and bringing stuff 🙂
The other story happened in the evening, when we also wanted to loot an airdrop. I got there first, my friend Mihi had wandered off somewhere. I picked up the items from the crate, then noticed two fairly heavily armed guys about 10 meters from me. I figured it was better to bail. I made it to my base, but like an idiot I ran past it and didn’t notice, so I turned back. As it turned out, the two guys followed me and killed me. I practically had a heart attack here, and was so pumped up that I grabbed my bolt-action rifle and charged at them with my friend Mihi, who was backing me up with a 9mm pistol. I managed to take out one of my killers from a distance when they started heading back, and sent the other to hell too after a 4-minute shootout. Since then we’re the ones fully armed, and my buddy Mihi is the proud owner of an AK-47. (I think we came out of this pretty well 😉 Currently I’m waiting to see if they’ll raid us one of these days, or if they don’t know which house is mine. Whatever, no point worrying about that too much.
